With another weekend at Cheltenham on the horizon; Newcastle, Warwick and Taunton stepped up to the fore and between them delivered a good days racing. There was Listed action at Warwick where a few non-runners unfortunately created a smallish field; but nonetheless Briery Belle ran out a tidy winner for Henry Daly, who looks a horse rejuvenated over the bigger obstacles. Over in Ireland, Clondaw Warrior – an HA favourite – was a cosy winner of the feature, justifying odds-on favouritism in strong fashion. One of Willie’s most travelled horse looks primed for another long campaign, picking up plenty of prize money in the process.

In a classic end of the day bumper, another French import into the Skelton yard was a very impressive winner, proving far too good for what in time will prove a decent enough field. He is a horse destined for much bigger things and the immediate questions put to the Skeltons’ of course surrounded the Champion Bumper in March. Barely out of first gear, the 4YO travelled far better than any of his rivals and the contest was won over half a mile out. Good ish ground seems vital to his progress and may force connections hands in where they run him; with Newbury’s Listed Bumper the immediate port of call. The yard appear quietly confident with this one and will be one to watch for the remainder of the year heading into next winter.
