Wednesday 12 October – Horseplay Runs Riot

The midweek racing continued at a steady pace this Wednesday, with the biggest story of the day concerning Apple’s Jade being targeted at the Champion Hurdle by new trainer Gordon Elliot. We also learned that Champion’s Day will now take place on the original outer track at Ascot and that the plans for a new sounder surface have gone a step too far with the ground being ultra quick. At Bath, the Listed race was taken by outsider Twitch for Hugo Palmer who continues a fine season once again.

Nottingham:

2 40 HORSEPLAY (A Balding) 15/8, C5 2YO Fillies Maiden, 1M, Good to Soft

Horseplay ran out a 13L winner, yes 13L, at Nottingham in a race run over the extended mile. This wasn’t a three mile chase… Admittedly the race looks well below par, but to win by 13L on your second start in a race that saw a John Gosden horse on debut, ridden by Frankie who was there specifically for it; Andrew Balding can only be pleased. She showed promise on debut and a change to some softer ground really brought on a new level. The pedigree suggests she’ll get further and is one to watch in some early season handicaps next summer. While there is still along way to go, nothing but positives can be taken at this stage for this young filly.
