There were a total of four flat cards across Britain yesterday, with Ayr’s Gold Cup Festival getting underway. Secret Number took the feature race for Godolphin after a lengthy absence, with the well fancied Almodovar unfortunately pulled up and Al Shaqab’s Abdon disappointing. Elsewhere, Yarmouth held some competitive handicaps, whilst Chelmsford and Pontefract completed the line up. It was a day where there were little in the way of stand out performances. However, Karl Burke began the Ayr Gold Cup Festival in fine fashion and admitted he likes to target races here and his animals look worth following entering the weekend.
3 40 SPORTY YANKEE (K Burke) 9/4, C5 H’Cap, 1M5F, Soft
Sporty Yankee was heavily supported prior to the off and whenever a Karl Burke horse is backed, it’s usually an ominous sign for the bookmakers. He struck a double at Ayr and always performs well at this festival, with many of his owners local to the area. Sporty Yankee travelled smoothly and always looked comfortable tracking the pace up front. It was a lovely, patient ride from apprentice Jordan Vaughan; just as the leader looked to be getting away he delivered his ride perfectly to cruise up and take the spoils. It may have only been a C5 handicap, but if this horse gets it’s conditions it could deliver a couple of grades up.
