July came to a close with a bang for HA, with another long shot winner this month, when Hillbilly Boy took the Listed honours at Chester for Tom Dascombe. Advised at 20/1, then drifting to 25/1 before a late surge of support saw an SP of 8/1. We have had a brilliant July selection wise and a full breakdown of results, the best performances we have seen and the top horses to follow from July will be posted over the next couple of days. In France yesterday, Deauville took the limelight with the Group 1 Prix Rothschild for fillies and mares.

Al Shaqab’s star 3YO filly continues to impress on the big stage and she ran out a cosy winner of the Prix Rothschild on Sunday. Settling well in the middle of the pack, she was always in a handy position and it looked ominous for her rivals the way she was travelling. Lumiere and Alice Springs were very disappointing, with Lumiere more or less being pulled up suggesting something was amiss. But even on form, beating Qemah in full stride seems a tough ask now. The french filly is a class above at a mile, going on most surfaces and using a variety of tactics, she doesn’t rely on things going her way either. Leopardstown for the Irish Champions Weekend is the next port of call, for the Matron Stakes against her female counterparts. The field is likely to be slightly tougher than what she faced at Deauville, however she will certainly still be the one to beat.
