Where do we begin? Saturday was full of top quality racing spread around the length and breadth of Britain. The finale of the July Festival was a thrilling occasion with the July Cup providing one of the best fields a flat race has seen over that distance for a good few years. York and Ascot both held competitive cards with good weather drawing in some nice crowds. Elsewhere, Chester, Hamilton and Salisbury also went racing over the flat.
3 15 MUTAKAYYEF (W Haggas) 7/2, Group 2, 1M, Good to Firm
MUTAKAYYEF was an impressive winner of the Summer Mile at Ascot and the drop down in trip to a mile has enabled William Haggas’s horse to make the next step up on an already strong looking CV. He clearly goes on any ground and is unbeaten in two starts this campaign. Haggas has been struggling and has been due a winner in a big race this year. The race was put to bed with well over a furlong to go and certainly has another big race in him.
4 00 BOYNTON (C Appleby) 7/1, Group 2 2YO, 7F, Good to Firm
That man, Charlie Appleby, is at it again; with another win in a strong race. Together with WAR DECREE, BOYNTON was a good five lengths clear of the rest of the field. Despite losing the lead approaching the finish, the Godolphin juvenile bravely fought back to get ahead before the finishing pole. He is entered in the Gimrack Stakes at York, but connections may now set some higher targets after this display.
4 35 LIMATO (H Candy) 9/2, Group 1, 6F, Good to Firm
This display reminded me a lot of LUMIERE’s resurgence yesterday and was equally as thrilling. Although there was an air of inevitability around HQ that LIMATO still had the edge to put a strong field to the sword at this level, it was a classy and dominant victory nonetheless. As soon as Henry Candy’s gelding broke clear of the pack there was no chance anyone was getting close to him. Six or Seven Furlongs seems to be his ideal trip, but connections are convinced he can still be as effective over a mile. Goodwood is set to come to soon it has emerged today, but there are plenty of options around at whichever trip they decide to go for next.
