Carlisle and Salisbury both hosted fairly strong flat cards on Wednesday, and Salisbury in particular looks to have thrown up some nice types. Bath and Kempton (AW) held evening meets and there was also flat action in Ireland at the Naas, where Dermot Weld brought up his 4000th winner.
2 10 JACKHAMMER (W.Knight) 25/1, C4 2YO Maiden, 7F, Soft
There was a surprise in the opener at Salisbury, and JACKHAMMER ran in cosily to win on debut beating some decent form. He should progress from this, and perhaps a step up to a mile would be on the agenda after running on so well.
4 50 AUSTRALIAN QUEEN (D.Elsworth) 14/1, C2 Handicap, 1M, Soft
This well thought of filly ran a nice race to finish behind two well handicapped horses in third. If she remains in handicap company she will win very soon off a mark somewhere around 90. David Elsworth clearly holds her in high regard, shown by her previous entries and it is seemingly when, not if, AUSTRALIAN QUEEN will win again.
4 10 OPAL TIARA (M.Channon) 7/2, C1 Listed 3YO Fillies, 7F, Good to Firm
In the best quality race of the day, OPAL TIARA ran out a comfortable and impressive winner. She clearly needed the quicker ground and deserves the black type after a tough but successful 2YO campaign. She is perhaps still open for some improvement and Mick Channon can cautiously hope for some more fun with her in some good races.
